Recently, my Godmother (and my mom’s best friend since junior high), Karen, while ordering lunch at Panera with her daughter, agreed to–after years of saying “no”–sign up for their loyalty card. Upon entering her phone number, the cashier looked at the information in the system and asked if her name was Michele.
Mom had at one point, apparently, signed up for a Panera card and forgotten her own number (a daily occurrence), so she gave them the number she knew by heart.
Now, every time Karen uses her card, the cashier asks “Michele or Karen?”
It’s her way of saying “Hi” every once-in-awhile, I’m quite sure…
