There’s a line from “The West Wing,” where Toby is stuck in a bar on the campaign trail, talking to a middle-class guy trying to figure how he’s going to afford to send his daughter to college, and this father says, “It should be hard. I like that it’s hard. But it should be a little easier, just a little easier.”

That line has rung in my mind repeatedly over the last several years as we’ve seemed to live right on the edge of “things are great” and “can’t catch a break,” of “hard work and doing the right thing pays off” and “having, really, everything you ever wanted comes at a price.”

And it should. It should be hard. It should come at a cost. 

But, sometimes, “just a little” would mean a whole lot…
